Is this actually based on research?

Yes. Unflatter scores the 50-item IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers developed by Lewis Goldberg — a public-domain instrument used in a large body of published work. The Big Five is the model most personality researchers use, in contrast to the popular type indicators, which sort people into categories the data does not support.

Why percentiles instead of a type?

Because traits are continuous. Almost nobody is simply 'an introvert'; you are somewhere on a distribution, usually not far from the middle. A percentile tells you how you compare with other adults, which survives a bad day rather than changing with it.

What do I get for free?

Everything you need to understand your results: all five percentiles on the distribution they came from, how much weight each score can bear, a written interpretation of every trait with its strengths and its costs, and one of the trait interactions from the paid report. My scores are all near the middle. Is that a failed result?

No, it is the most common result there is, and the report is written for it. An even profile means context shapes your behaviour more than temperament does — which changes what is worth working on. You will also get the leans inside your middle band, because a 58 and a 43 are not the same thing even though both are 'average'.

Do you store my answers?

No. Scoring happens in your browser and your result is encoded in the link itself. Progress is saved to your own device while you take the test and cleared when you finish. There is no account to create and no database of answers to leak.

Can I use this to screen job candidates?

Accepted Answer

No. Self-report personality questionnaires are not selection instruments, and using one this way is unreliable and, in many countries, legally risky. Use it for self-understanding, coaching conversations and team discussion instead.

How accurate is it?

The instrument is sound; what it measures is how you described yourself today. Mood, context and self-knowledge all move the numbers a few points. Every score you get is shown with a note on how much weight it can bear, and anything within roughly ten points of the middle should be read as 'in the middle'.
